Frequently Asked Questions — Florida Scratch-Offs

How does the +EV Score work?
The +EV (positive Expected Value) Score is a multi-factor metric that analyzes prize pool depletion, payout rate trends, remaining prize density, ticket price, and overall game lifecycle. A higher +EV score means the game currently offers better value compared to its original odds.
Where does this data come from?
All game data is sourced directly from floridalottery.com. We scrape the official remaining prize pages daily and compute derived metrics like tickets sold, EV, and payout rate from the raw prize tier data.
How often is data updated?
Data is refreshed daily. The Florida Lottery typically updates remaining prize information once per day. Our timestamps at the top of each page show exactly when data was last pulled.
What is "Payout Rate" vs "Expected Value"?
Payout Rate is the percentage of money returned as prizes (e.g., 72% means $0.72 returned per $1 spent on average). Expected Value (EV) is the dollar profit or loss per ticket: a $5 ticket with 72% payout has an EV of -$1.40. When the payout rate exceeds 100%, the EV is positive — a rare and valuable situation.
What does "% Tickets Remaining" mean?
It’s the estimated percentage of total tickets that have NOT been sold yet. We calculate this from the ratio of remaining prizes to original prizes. Lower percentages mean the game is further into its lifecycle.
Are some games really +EV (positive expected value)?
Yes. As cheaper prizes are claimed but top prizes remain, the remaining ticket pool can shift to positive EV. This doesn’t guarantee a win — it means the statistical edge has temporarily shifted toward the player. Our rankings help you find these opportunities.
What are "Rare Finds"?
When the Florida Lottery stops distributing a game, unsold tickets already at retail locations remain available for purchase. These ended-but-still-available games are “rare finds” because their odds are frozen at the final snapshot — often with favorable remaining prize pools.
What are the taxes on FL scratch-off winnings?
Florida has no state income tax. Prizes over $600 are reported to the IRS. Prizes over $5,000 have 24% federal tax automatically withheld. This makes Florida one of the best states for lottery winners — you keep significantly more compared to states like New York (which has an additional ~8.82% state tax).
What do the Strategy Profiles mean?
Each strategy profile re-ranks ALL games using a different mathematical lens: Thorp uses the Kelly Criterion for growth-optimal betting, Haigh analyzes prize tier depletion patterns, Mandel focuses on achievable EV excluding longshots, and MIT targets concentrated expected value from accessible prizes.
How do I read the "Today’s Odds" report?
Today’s Odds shows every active game grouped by price tier with current prizes remaining at each tier. It’s designed to be print-friendly — retailers and serious players use it as a quick reference at the counter.
Does buying more tickets improve my odds?
Each ticket is an independent event, so buying more increases your chances proportionally but doesn’t change the per-ticket odds. However, our data helps you choose which games to buy, maximizing the value of every dollar you spend.
Is this legal? Is this gambling advice?
This is a data analysis tool, not gambling advice. We provide publicly available lottery data in an analyzed format. All data comes from official Florida Lottery sources. Players must be 18+ to purchase scratch-off tickets in Florida. Please play responsibly.
